You Don't Have an Idea Problem

For founders

Every founder I meet has a notes app full of ideas. None of them are stuck because they ran out. They're stuck because they have eleven and won't commit to one.

An idea problem feels productive. You get to brainstorm, riff, feel the dopamine of possibility. But it's usually avoidance wearing a creative costume. The hard part was never generating options. The hard part is killing the other ten so the one can become real.

What actually unblocks founders isn't a better idea. It's a clearer answer to three questions: Who is this for, specifically? What's the one thing it does better than the alternative? And what's the smallest version I can put in front of a real person this month? Get those, and the idea problem evaporates — because it was never the problem.

Generating ideas is easy. Committing to one is the whole job.

Most pitch decks I review are clarity problems pretending to be strategy problems. A second set of eyes that pressure-tests the one thing you're actually building — and points you at the next move — is worth more than another month of options.

If this is where you are right now, here's the next step.
